The Art of Failure.

I made a video a few years back with my take on failure, and I’m pretty sure it was something like this…

“Failure doesn’t exist for you, because you’re simply learning how to pivot or solve a problem.”

I stand by it, but let me expand on that today.

Social media loves to tell a story, but that story isn’t all of the truth, is it?

I’m guilty of this too- not by intention, but we often don’t show ourselves getting beaten down and picking up the pieces. We get used to it. Naturally, we dust ourselves off, show up the next day, and do what needs to be done.

(This could go into a whole other tangent of “you never know what someone’s going through behind the scenes,” but we’ll save that for next time…)

So, let me actually bump it back and begin with this:

Nobody has it together, and overnight success really doesn’t exist. Overnight LEAPS—sure, yes. But true success?

True success is supposed to take time.

SUSTAINABLE success is supposed to take time.

YOU are supposed to take time.

For every artist that has landed on the big stages, they spent years nourishing their gift, singing for free in front of three people at a beat-up nightclub at 2:00 AM, beating their head against a wall vocally (me), and spending their savings on recording an album. For every author who’s written a novel, there were years of rewrites, rejections, and reflections.

Look up a story of someone you admire and truly read about them- nearly all have undergone immense personal and professional struggles as they aligned (and the process of alignment means you’ll bump into some things along the way to refine what that path looks like…) to their purpose.

Believing that one thing will set you up for the optimal life may actually do you a disservice. I’m all about expanding our capacity for what’s possible, but to believe that would negate the purpose of the spiritual journey and your human development.

Expect difficulty in your chosen arena. Rejoice in it! You're on the right path.

Now, in expecting "failure" (perceived roadblocks) as a part of the mission, let’s add the human element to it:

Let people see you fall and be vulnerable. It's a breath of fresh air.

First off, it will actually help them- not feed into a false narrative that one moment sets us up for success for the rest of our lives. Additionally, the world is begging for vulnerability. We don’t want to be shoved the façade of perfection- we want to know there’s a genuine hand that can guide us through our mess because they’ve been through it too, and in stepping beyond the mess, that we can STILL ACHIEVE great things- and we can. That's how it's designed.

Now, let’s go further. Consider the most beautiful pieces of art, greatest voices of our time, or most incredible mansions- these took time, energy, and consistency to build.

Again- as they should!

If you purchased a new home- the home you've dreamt of your whole life, would you want it built lazily, with minimal effort, and those assigned to building it finding the easy way out, leading to possible cracks in the home years down the road? No!

The greatest things are supposed to take time, energy, and consistent effort.

You’ll have to be knocked down to gain the true strength, refinement, and skill needed to pursue and SUSTAIN the purpose. And by the way, it does feel that much more rewarding when achieved because your conviction has been strengthened.

I always say- I would rather choose the difficulty of breaking out of the box than remain in the one I’m so desperate to escape. You’ll have difficulty on both paths- but you get to pick.

So, I'll leave you with this:

To have a Creator that is looking down going, “Alright, let’s see what you do with what I’ve given you,” with a smile, is incomparable.

Relish in the resistance, the failures, and the inevitable victory, because stepping into your inevitable chapter means that you’ve learned…

  1. If I am consistent and attuned to my own refinement, I will achieve what is needed.

  2. If I see every problem as a solution waiting to be discovered, I will achieve what is needed.

  3. If I continue to rewire my mind toward possibility, potential, and purpose, I will achieve what is needed- because the seeds I am planting and watering will, of course, reap.

You may not know what you’ll reap (this isn't entirely up to you), but you’ll find out.

So, dedicate your life to it. Why not? Leap. Refine your gifts. Use them daily. Wring it dry, and better yet…

Continue to do the right thing even if you don’t see the results for a time. You’re being built for so much more than you think, and your inevitable victory will come.
