Expanding Your Capacity for Good: Getting Out of Your Own Way

I call it the “tap dance.”

If you’ve read my blogs, you may have heard me mention it before-

You’re at the starting line, excited and ready to go, only to find that once the buzzer goes off, your quick run turns into a fearful slowing down… then a sudden stop. Before you know it, you’ve turned around- done.

The interesting thing? The track was clear and open.

Internally, something stopped you-

The fear, the doubt, the uncertainty.

There’s familiarity at the starting line.

There’s familiarity in knowing that you can pursue something new.

But there's newness in actually doing it.

I’m passionate about this internal rubber band, as I like to call it, because I see it in all of our lives.

We get excited, ready to step into what’s new and what’s meant for us, only to do something that pulls us back down to the baseline we say we’re so eager to move beyond.

Why is that?

According to Gay Hendricks, this may be a symptom of our Upper Limit Problem- or ULP, as he calls it.

It’s the internal “thermostat” we each have, which starts to read “too high” once things are going… well.

The interesting thing? Each of our thermostats is different.

It’s shaped by how we grew up, the experiences we’ve had-

When you’ve been in survival mode, how can you truly embody thriving?

When you’ve only ever seen money without happiness (or happiness without money), how can you let yourself have both?

If you’ve been rejected time and time again, how can you truly receive the love God is so readily offering?

It cuts deep, and I’ve seen this- and continue to navigate it- in my own life.

This feels like a good time for my mountain analogy.

As we climb in this life, we have the opportunity to take off all the layers that no longer serve us:

Old stories, habits, and identities.

It’s safe to- and perhaps, it’s an invitation to- be free.

My mission with you all is simple:

To help you get out of your own way and into what’s to come.

Today, let’s solidify that what’s to come is:

Peace. Joy. Understanding. Goodness.

The knowing that you are held, and the even deeper knowing that there’s good to come.

As you read this, ask yourself:

Was there a time in my life when something was going really well, only for me to pull away or do something to stop it?

If I’m being honest with myself… is there a pattern here?

In this Wednesday’s The Gathering meeting, we’re diving into this very topic:

Expanding Our Capacity for Good.

Let’s free ourselves from the internal constraints placed upon us so we can receive what has already been prepared for us.

All is well, and I hope to see you there.
